About

Welcome to Home-School-U! My name is Shellie. Whether you are a homeschooling parent, classroom teacher, or somewhere in between, I am so glad that you are here.

My journey as an educator began back in 2003 when I was 8 months pregnant with my second child and enrolled my oldest son in Kindergarten at a public independent study/homeschool program. I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to go back to college to earn my bachelor’s degree and teaching credential. Then it happened. Surprise! I was about to turn 40…and I was also pregnant. Needless to say, that put a crimp in my educational goals, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.

I finally completed my master’s degree with a focus in online education in 2017. That same year, I was hired at an online public charter school as a middle school teacher. I spent the last 4 years teaching 6th grade. Little did I know just how much this was going to prepare me for 2020. Even though I was already teaching online, my position did not completely insulate me from the shifting sands in education that we have all experienced over the last few years. Like so many other teachers, I was struggling with work/life balance, an increase in workload, and a decrease in support services for my students. I am convinced that there has to be a better way to do what we all set out to do…inspire a love of learning in our students. With your help, I hope to combine the best things about learning at home and in the classroom. Let’s get started!
